Converting Food Waste to Renewable Energy

About one third of the world’s food, nearly 1.3 billion tons is wasted annually and mostly ending in landfills causing air and water pollution along with health hazards to human. In addition, continuous production of energy and chemical fertilizer is depleting natural resources. In fact this food waste can be used as nutrient resource to produce bioenergy (biogas) from anaerobic digestion and biofertilizer (compost) from composting technologies. These bio refinery approaches produce clean energy and organic fertilizer to combat the climate change effectively. Replacing food waste for energy production, resource recovery and carbon sequestration can be sustainable solution for future world.

Mobile App that Can “See”

Similar to how humans see the world through our eyes, mobile phone can also "see" the world through its camera. It understands the environment, such as depth and lighting information, by detecting feature points in the captured images. With the help of existing APIs, we can build mobile app that can understand the world and interact with information, which is so called Augmented Reality (AR). For example, we can place a virtual kitten in the real world and watch it moving around. In this workshop, participants will develop a mobile app that can provide AR experiences.

Bioresource Management and Sustainable Agriculture

Amid the outbreak of coronavirus and the adoption of quarantine measures by some countries, food security and the importance of sustainable agriculture is becoming more widely recognised at the global level. This thematic talk aims to raise students’ awareness of food and agriculture issues related to the sustainability of our daily life and to highlight the importance of bioresource management in safeguarding people from environmental risks.

Math Romance

The Department of Mathematics has recently launched a campaign, called Math Romance, aimed at promoting young people’s awareness and interest in mathematics. The theme of the campaign is “mathematics and romantic love”, which is composed of a series of short films, educational videos, blog posts, and social media pages. The campaign includes a love comedy called The Love Formulas, which is about a nerdy math student striving for his love journey, and how he out-smarts his romantic rivals using knowledge in mathematics. In this talk, the speaker will briefly explain some of mathematical concepts featured in these short films.

Chemistry in Life – Food, Biomedicine and Cosmetics

Chemistry plays important roles in different areas of our daily lives, including food, biomedicine and cosmetics. In this talk, examples of food trivia in everyday life will be presented, in which students can understand the respective food chemistry knowledge behind. Students will have an overview on how chemists could foster the advancement of biomedicine research, such as drug and vaccine discoveries for cancers, infectious and neurodegeneration diseases in both academic and corporate industries. Moreover, small molecules used in skincare products, including the chemical formula of synthetic and natural ingredients, such as botanicals, retinoids, vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories will be presented.

Monte Carlo Method for Some Problems in Probability

Some simple probability problems may be difficulty to solve by mathematical equations. By writing computer programs implementing Monte Carlo method, those problems can be easily solved. Monte Carlo method is a numerical approximation based on the simulations using random numbers. In this workshop, the implementation of Monte Carlo method by Python programming language will be introduced.
