Year One Curriculum

Admission Requirements

Subjects Minimum Entry Level

*Remarks: Any HKDSE elective subjects, including Extended Part of Mathematics (Module 1 or Module 2)

Students will be admitted on a Faculty basis with broad-based education in all scientific fields in Year 1. It allows students to explore and experience various scientific disciplines before choosing their Major study programme in Year 2.

Year One Curriculum for all students admitted into Faculty of Science

Apart from Integrated Science Laboratory, students are free to choose four or five of the above lecture courses in their Year 1 curriculum.

For students who have attained a 5* in relevant science subjects, they will be guaranteed for admission to the relevant major programme in Year 2. For example, if he/she has attained a 5* in HKDSE Chemistry, he/she will be guaranteed for admission to Chemistry as his/her major programme.

The criteria for major programme assignment for other students will include the performance in relevant Year One Curriculum course, the cGPA attained by the end of Year 1 and interview performance, if applicable.

Introduction to Biology

  • suit the needs of students who need a broad background in biology; and
  • to deliver the main principles and mechanisms in biological sciences for pursuing in-depth studies

Introduction to Chemistry

  • provide students with fundamental concepts and principles in chemistry; and
  • to demonstrate the diverse and important applications of chemistry in everyday life.

Essence of Computing

  • prepare students with problem solving methodologies and skills using computer;
  • discuss the key components of a computer and the use of computer in our daily life.
  • introduce high level programming methodology and skills.
  • upon completion, students are able to:
    1. describe how a computer works and its importance in our daily life and
    2. write high level programs for solving real world problems.

Introduction to Mathematics and Statistics

  • introduces basic mathematics and statistics for university students
  • covers a wide range of mathematical topics including elementary calculus, optimization, numerical methods, and applications in finance, as well as statistical topics such as confidence intervals, tests of hypotheses, and linear regression

Introduction to Physics and Energy Science

  • introduces the basic concepts of physics with emphasis on real-life examples;
  • explores the fundamental physical principles in the workings of everyday objects and natural phenomena;
  • discusses physical principles applied in the field of energy science and technology.

Integrated Science Laboratory

  • provide students with basic foundation knowledge in laboratory; and
  • give practical experience in solving real life problems by integrating knowledge from various science perspectives.
