About the Programme

The Mentorship Programme, launching in the second semester by the Faculty of Science, aims to connect undergraduate science students with experienced professionals across various fields. This initiative is designed to foster personal and professional growth, enhance academic learning, and bridge the gap between academic studies and real-world applications. Participants will engage in meaningful interactions that promote both personal and professional development.

Objectives

  • Personal Growth: Foster confidence and self-awareness in mentees through supportive mentorship.
  • Career Guidance: Provide insights into diverse science-related careers and industries.
  • Skills Development: Assist mentees in developing essential skills such as networking, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Networking Opportunities: Facilitate connections between students and industry professionals.

Matching Criteria

  • Academic Field of Study: Pair mentors and mentees based on similarities in their academic disciplines to ensure relevant guidance.
  • Interests and Goals Alignment: Consider the personal interests and career aspirations of both mentors and mentees to enhance engagement and ensure a mutually beneficial mentorship experience.

Mentees' Responsibilities

    • Active Participation: Attend all scheduled meetings and events with mentors.
    • Goal Setting: Define personal and professional goals to discuss with mentors.
    • Open-Mindedness: Approach each interaction with an open mind, ready to consider new perspectives and suggestions from your mentor.
    • Respect for Mentor: Value the mentor’s invaluable time and guidance by maintaining professionalism in all interactions.
    • Constructive Feedback: Provide feedback on the mentorship experience to help improve the programme.

Mentoring Process

    Step 1: Training
Mentee applicants will have the opportunity to attend a training session designed to provide an understanding of the programme, their roles and responsibilities as mentees, as well as grooming and business etiquette.

    Step 2: Selection
The selection criteria for mentees include their academic performance, commitment to the mentorship programme, and engagement within the Faculty of Science and Hong Kong Baptist University.

    Step 3: Matching
The Faculty will match mentors and mentees based on their academic disciplines, interests, career goals, and professional fields. While efforts will be made to accommodate all applicants, successful pairing depends on the availability of both mentors and mentees.

    Step 4: Initial Meeting
Conduct an introductory meeting to establish rapport and set clear expectations for the mentoring relationship.

    Step 5: Regular Check-ins
Arrange regular check-ins (suggested monthly) to discuss progress, challenges, and any adjustments needed in the mentoring approach.

Step 6: Feedback Loop Maintain continuous feedback to ensure the mentoring relationship is productive and beneficial for both parties.
