Prof. Ng Kwok Po, Michael
Department of Mathematics
Professor Michael Ng is a brilliant applied mathematician with research interests in data mining, imaging sciences and scientific computing.

Together with an impressive research record of 3,156 citations and an h-index of 29, Professor Ng has published two books, five proceedings and more than 200 refereed journal papers, including 47 in the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) journals and 34 in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) journals. He has a remarkable funding record, having obtained over HK$19 million of external grants as Principal Investigator/Project Coordinator. He is moreover the first mathematician to secure an Innovation and Technology Funding Project. His excellent research capability is also evident from the Outstanding Paper Award he received at the World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Applied Computing.

Being a renowned expert in scientific computing and imaging sciences, Professor Ng is often invited to participate in international conferences. He was SIAM Speaker at the 14th Conference of the International Linear Algebra Society in 2007, and Keynote Speaker at the 2008 IEEE International Conference on Granular Computing. In 2009, he became the first Chinese scholar since 1997 to be the Plenary Speaker at the SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra. He is also the Conference Co-Chair of the upcoming SIAM Conference on Imaging Science at HKBU in 2014. This will be the first time for a SIAM Conference to be held outside the United States or Europe.

As a distinguished scholar in the applied mathematics field, Professor Ng is much sought after to serve the academic community. He was the first mathematician in Hong Kong to be appointed Director of the Croucher Foundation Advanced Study Institute in 2008. He has served as a member on the Research Grants Council Engineering Panel and as secretary of the East Asia SIAM Section. In addition, Professor Ng has been invited to serve as principal editor for the Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics and editorial board member for several peer-reviewed scientific journals, including the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications, the International Journal of Data Mining and Bioinformatics and Network Modeling Analysis in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics.

In recognition of Professor Ng's significant contribution and dedicated efforts to his chosen discipline, he is awarded the President's Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work.
