Since joining the University in 2002, Professor Xu’s publication record has been remarkable with more than 150 research articles, many appearing in top-tiered journals. He has been invited to write and edit books and book chapters owing to his excellent research work. As well as receiving awards and honours, he has attracted extensive coverage from the media for his achievements. Professor Xu has been consistently active in the professional community. From 2003 to 2015 he was rated as being among the most prolific authors by two high impact journals, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Knowledge & Data Engineering and IEEE Transactions on Parallel & Distributed Systems. His research has an exceptionally high citation count of more than 6,000 with a high H-index of 40.
Professor Xu’s excellence in scholarly work has also been demonstrated by his success in securing competitive external funding. As Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator, he has reaped 14 external grants from local and national funding resources including the General Research Fund, the Collaborative Research Fund, the Innovation and Technology Fund and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
As a highly regarded scholar, Professor Xu is often invited to address international conferences as a plenary speaker, and has also been servicing as Associate Editor in four top-tier journals. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Pennsylvania State University and Senior Visiting Fellow at Fudan University in Shanghai in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Professor Xu is widely respected as being one of the few colleagues in the Department who can transform his fundamental research into practical applications. He has been granted two US patents and a further patent application is awaiting approval. Professor Xu is the co-founder of the University Database Research Group. Under his leadership, the Group has become one of the four key research areas in the Department.
The Selection Committee finds Professor Xu’s extensive scope of research work and tireless contribution to promoting research excellence in the University truly commendable and agrees that he is a deserving recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work.
