Prof. Zhou Changsong
Department of Physics
Professor Zhou Changsong is a world-renowned expert in brain studies and complex systems. He is extremely active professionally and collaborates extensively with experimental neuro and cognitive scientists locally and internationally. Their joint, cross-disciplinary efforts have led to important insights into brain working underlying cognitive functions, diseases and disorders.

Professor Zhou’s general research interest is dynamical processes in complex systems. His recent research emphasis is on combining mathematical modelling, computer simulations and analysis of experimental and empirical data to achieve a more quantitative, system level understanding of various complex systems, such as neural dynamics, brain networks and collective human activity.

The significance of Professor Zhou’s interdisciplinary research is evidenced by his publications, with a remarkable 15,000 citations (google scholar), more than 1,000 citations per year in the past 10 years, and an H-index of 47. He has published over 150 reviewed journal papers and book chapters since 1997, and a number of his articles have been published in top-tier interdisciplinary journals, including five articles in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS).

Since joining the University in 2007, Professor Zhou has established a distinguished record in securing external funding. He has been very successful in winning external research grants, including five General Research Fund (GRF) grants, three grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), three Germany-HK Joint Research Scheme grants, and one Alexander von Humboldt Group Linkage Grant.

Professor Zhou has demonstrated capability in making significant scientific breakthroughs, obtaining the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance as Young Researcher in 2011, and for research supervision, receiving the Faculty Award for Outstanding Performance in Research Supervision in 2020. He has supervised more than 10 postgraduate students as principal supervisor since 2012.

Professor Zhou is globally recognised as an expert in the field. He has organised or co-organised 25 conferences, symposiums or workshops since 2012, and he has been keynote or invited speakers at over 100 talks in conference and research institutes. He is the Academic Editor of PLoS One and Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports and Cognitive Neurodynamics. He is also a reviewer for more than 10 top inter-disciplinary journals.

Professor Zhou has developed an international collaboration network with several top institutions to initiate and conduct collaborative research on the role of complex brain dynamics in cognitive functions, individual differences, and neurodegeneration risk.

Professor Zhou’s high-quality scholarly research has had an important impact on, and made an immense contribution to, related disciplines and professions. His vast research accomplishments, active participation in international conferences as organiser and speaker, and scholarly journals as editor and review member, and his distinguished record in attracting research grants make him a worthy recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work.
